BANGKOK, Philippines -- Air Commandos from the 353rd Special Operations Wing recently responded to a request from the Kingdom of Thailand, assisting in critical search and recovery operations in Bangkok following a devastating earthquake, March 29, 2025.
A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Thailand, causing widespread destruction. In the immediate aftermath, the Thai government requested U.S. assistance. In response, U.S. Special Operations Command Pacific deployed multiple special tactics units—including the 353rd SOW—to support emergency search and recovery efforts.
“As the only Air Force Special Operations permanently stationed unit in the Pacific, the 353rd SOW is uniquely positioned and uniquely qualified to respond to emergencies like this,” said the 353rd Special Operations Wing Commander Shawn V. Young. “Our ability to rapidly deploy and operate self-sustained in austere environments is what makes us a partner of choice and the tip of the spear in this theater.”
This was the strongest earthquake to impact Thailand since 2016. Among the most significant damage was the collapse of a 33-story building under construction in Bangkok. The collapse prompted a swift response from personnel assigned to the 353rd SOW, the 31st Rescue Squadron, and deployed members from Air Force Special Operations Command.
“This is why we are here,” said U.S. Ambassador to Thailand Robert F. Godec. “Friends help friends in their time of need”
Through tireless effort and teamwork, U.S. and Thai forces worked side-by-side to locate, assist, and save lives in the affected areas. The 353rd Special Operations Wing remains ready to stand with our Thai allies and ensure the safety and security of the Indo-Pacific region.
